I'm a storyteller. It's what I do

I love narrating – from the moment I open a new manuscript, from the first page to the last, every new project is a voyage of discovery and a new challenge.

As a performer, I focus not only on what words mean, but on the emotion and intention behind them. It’s my job to create an emotional connection with what I read, to engage fully with each text and bring it to life. I aim to make the words my own; this connection and commitment help my narration to appear effortless and spontaneous.

I narrate audiobooks in all genres – non-fiction and fiction; horror, fantasy, historical, thrillers, classics, comedy, literary fiction and romance. I read for many major publishers around the world. I am equally happy recording in a mainstream studio as in my own professional studio at home, sometimes working solo, sometimes with a director listening in.

Professional Organisations

I have been a member of Equity since 1969. I am also a proud member of The APA (Audio Publishers’ Association); PANA (The Professional Audiobook Narrators Association); World Voices Organisation, and ACA (Audiobook Creators Alliance).

Authors live with their manuscript for many months before it is published, and each book goes through numerous drafts, edits, and rewrites. Each author has a voice in their head as they write, an aural picture of how the narrative should develop, what atmosphere should be created and of who each character is. When an author (or their publisher) hands over a manuscript to me – a complete stranger – they trust me to stay faithful to their intent, while bringing their story, and the people within it to life. It’s a huge responsibility and one that I take very seriously.

I suspect that for the author, taking your manuscript into audio feels a little like handing your new baby over to a child minder for the first time and wondering whether you’ll recognise him when he is handed back to you!

I hope I do justice to the writing of all the authors I narrate. I share their laughter and their tears and always feel a sense of sadness when I finish a book and have to say goodbye to the people in it. It is an enormous honour and privilege to be chosen to narrate an audiobook, and I am immensely grateful to all the wonderful writers and publishers I work with for allowing me to share in their creations.

Helen Lloyd transports listeners to rural Suffolk during WWII … clear narration helps create the perfect backdrop for this historical mystery. Her character portrayals produce believable males and females. Lloyd's excellent pacing helps keep the plot moving to a satisfying conclusion.
